  • Meta’s Head Of Product Says Metaverse Is Closing The Gap With Smartphones

The term ‘metaverse’ is a fluid concept, with some envisioning it as the next evolution of the internet – a three-dimensional realm of endless possibilities. However, some dismiss it as a buzzword, often used to market non-fungible token collections.

Meta is part of the former group, investing heavily in the development of the metaverse and the cutting-edge technology of augmented and virtual reality. During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Meta’s Head of Product, Chris Cox, highlighted the current limitations of the metaverse.

Are Smartphones And The Metaverse On Par?

According to Cox, Meta has dedicated the past eight years to creating a virtual reality product line that is both cost-effective and immersive. The aim was to make it versatile enough to be integrated into any field, social interactions, gaming, physical fitness, medicine, product design, or drug research.

With the release of the Meta Quest 2, they have mostly succeeded in achieving this goal. The Quest 2 is currently the most popular VR headset and the top choice for developers, but for the metaverse to attain the same level of significance as smartphones, Cox believes there is still room for improvement.

More Accessibility Into The Metaverse

Cox views the current internet as a blueprint for a functional metaverse. Cox stated during a panel discussion that he sees the internet as a valuable analogy for the metaverse, as certain aspects of it are seamlessly interconnected.

He explained that switching between apps across devices is now effortless, with Google Maps or Instagram functioning seamlessly across all devices, minimizing confusion. Unfortunately, he said such interoperability needs to be improved in the metaverse’s current stage of development.

A Call For Open Metaverse

“Cox is not alone in his vision for an open metaverse. Many experts are calling for established guidelines for the metaverse. For Instance, the Khronos Group is a vocal proponent of standardized metaverse protocols. To prevent compatibility issues from arising, the Metaverse Standards Forum looks to invite industry leaders to establish interoperability standards for a metaverse that is both inclusive and open.

Neal Stephenson, the renowned metaverse wordsmith is also in favour of an open metaverse. Snow Crash’s author plans to push the idea through his company, Lamina1. In partnership with Peter Vessenes, his co-founder, he aims to lay the foundation for the metaverse by building an open-source blockchain.”
