Duolingo announced the launch of a new subscription tier called Duolingo Max. Duolingo Max has features such as “Explain My Answer” and “Roleplay.” The language-learning business stated in a blog post that it has collaborated with OpenAI to employ GPT-4. GPT-4 is the most recent iteration of the AI technology that powers the well-known ChatGPT service.
Duolingo’s collaboration with OpenAI can now provide customers with extra capabilities than the Super Duolingo plan. This announcement coincides with the release of OpenAI’s next-generation GPT-4 AI language model.
The premium membership level Duolingo Max provides additional advantages to Super Duolingo. These benefits include limitless hearts, ad-free experiences, and individualized reviews.
Roleplay
The newly introduced “Roleplay” feature on Duolingo enables users to practice their conversational skills with characters within the app through an AI chatbot powered by GPT-4. The chatbot is responsive and reactive, taking users through numerous situations like placing a coffee order in a Parisian café or discussing travel plans with a particular app character.
Humans write the scenarios presented in Roleplay. They ensure the initial prompt aligns with the user’s course progress. These experts also craft the opening message and instruct the AI model on continuing the conversation. Upon completing the conversation, users receive feedback powered by AI, assessing the accuracy and complexity of their responses and providing tips for future conversations.
Explain My Answer
Users can learn more about their answers in a lesson, whether right or wrong, using Duolingo’s “Explain My Answer” feature. Users can touch a button to start a discussion with Duo after finishing a particular activity to get feedback on why their response was correct or incorrect, examples, or further explanation.
According to the company, users uncertain of the right response or continuously making the same error would find this option helpful. These two new capabilities are now only available to iOS users studying Spanish and French for English speakers. But Duolingo has plans to make these functionalities accessible to other programs and platforms soon.
Duolingo Chatbot
Microsoft came under fire earlier this year for adding ChatGPT to Bing after users reported receiving uncomfortable and scary replies from the search engine. The chatbot can sometimes answer in a manner inconsistent with Microsoft’s intended tone.
Duolingo tries to make sure that its chatbot has an entertaining, encouraging, and even witty tone, in line with Duo’s style, to prevent a scenario like this. Duolingo continuously evaluates the explanations produced by the AI in ‘Roleplay’ and ‘Explain My Answer’ to ensure they are factually accurate and written in the right tone.
