  • Leaked Roadmap Shows Meta’s AR and VR Hardware Plans from 2023 to 2027
VR AR

A hardware roadmap leaked to show proposed Meta’s AR and VR devices that will launch from 2023 to 2027. Meta’s executives shared the roadmap with thousands of Meta’s Reality Labs division employees earlier in the week. The Verge published the leaked roadmap. The leak indicates that Meta intends to continue investing in consumer hardware despite facing multiple challenges and cost-cutting measures across the company.

Virtual Reality (VR)

The Meta Quest 2’s successor comes out in 2023. Last year, Mark Zuckerberg and Andrew Bosworth (Meta’s head of technology) revealed that this device launch would happen in 2023.

Meta’s VP for VR, Mark Rabkin, informed employees that the company had sold almost 20 million Quest headsets.

The leaked report showed that Meta Quest 3, codenamed Stinson, will have the processing power and better form factor than its predecessor had. Also, the device will have a more advanced mixed reality experience like Meta Quest Pro. However, the new device is projected to have a higher price point than the Meta Quest 2.

Meta’s main issue with the Quest 3 is to persuade customers to pay a higher price than the current Quest 2. Rabkin stated 41 new apps and games. The device also comes with new mixed-reality experiences. Rabkin further revealed that Meta intends to launch a more “accessible” headset named Ventura in 2024.

Augmented Reality (AR)

During Meta’s roadmap presentation on Tuesday, Alex Himel, the company’s VP for AR, outlined their device plans up to 2027. The second generation Ray-Ban Stories cameras and audio glasses will be in 2023 fall. Additionally, in 2025, Meta plans to release its third-generation smart glasses. These glasses will be their pioneer display-enabled smart glasses.

Meta plans to release a smartwatch alongside its glasses. The new smartwatch is an improvement over the existing wristband and will provide both neural interface and smartwatch capabilities. Himel stated that Meta aims to offer both input devices for users’ wrists and familiar smartwatch features without choosing one over the other.

In 2027, the company’s first true AR glasses, Orion, will launch after eight years of development. These advanced glasses will be able to project high-end avatars’ holograms into the real world. These devices will be expensive. Meta employees will be able to try out the device in 2024 before released to the public as part of their “Innovation” line for early adopters.
