According to a Nevada business filing last month, Elon Musk recently found a new artificial intelligence company named X.AI. The March 9 filing indicates that Musk is the company’s sole director. The filing also lists Jared Birchall, his family office manager, as the secretary.
There have been rumors regarding Musk’s intention to launch an AI company for a while. According to a report by Business Insider, Musk acquired thousands of GPUs (Graphic Processing Units) to assist a future AI product. Also, the Financial Times noted that Musk intends to launch a competing AI company to Microsoft-backed OpenAI. According to reports, Musk even asked SpaceX and Tesla’s investors for financial backing to start the firm. This new business will add to Musk’s diverse portfolio, including Twitter, Tesla, SpaceX, Boring, and Neuralink.
Elon Musk Stance on AI
In previous years, Musk has publicly voiced doubt about the potential of artificial intelligence. He has even called for a full stop to its development, stressing its potential dangers to civilization. Despite being one of the OpenAI co-founders in 2015, he left in 2018 after publicly opposing it. A letter signed by Musk recently demanded a break from the AI experiments.
Meanwhile, OpenAI has become well known due to technological developments like ChatGPT. It has significantly influenced Google and Microsoft’s current initiatives to incorporate AI technologies more completely into many of their businesses.
Elon Musk’s Non-Confirmation of Founding a New AI Company
When questioned about his GPU purchases during a Twitter Spaces interview, Musk said that it seemed like everyone and their dog were purchasing GPUs at the time. However, he did not mention any ambitions to found an AI business.
The name X.AI, which connects to Musk’s new artificial intelligence business, fits the branding of the X Corp. moniker he has given to Twitter. Additionally, it fits the “X” designation he has given to his concept of an “everything app.”
