  • Uk Officials Block Microsoft’s Push Towards The Metaverse

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) thwarted Microsoft’s bid to purchase Activision Blizzard for $69 billion today. The acquisition was expected to provide the necessary “building blocks” for Microsoft’s Metaverse. Microsoft initially announced the acquisition in 2022, with Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella highlighting the gaming industry’s crucial role in developing Metaverse platforms.
Microsoft aimed to broaden Activision Blizzard’s gaming operations across various platforms, including PCs, mobiles, consoles, and the cloud. However, the CMA blocked the acquisition due to competition concerns in the cloud gaming market.

The CMA warned that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard could impede competition by reserving popular titles like Call of Duty for its Games Pass digital storefront. The regulatory body stated that the purchase would enable Microsoft to dominate the rapidly expanding cloud gaming industry, which may stifle innovation and hinder market growth.

Microsoft’s Official Response

To address competition concerns, Microsoft is working to ensure that the cross-distribution of gaming apps benefits the company and eliminates exclusivity possibilities. Moreover, Microsoft proposes a 10-year deal to Nintendo, Sony, and Nvidia. This will allow Call of Duty to be available on their storefronts to ease concerns among rival publishers.

Brad Smith, Microsoft’s President and Vice Chair, stated that the company is dedicated to challenging the acquisition block. Smith criticized the CMA’s decision, claiming it rejects a practical solution to address competition concerns. He also claims that the CMA discourages investment and technology growth in the UK.

Activision Blizzard’s CEO, Bobby Kotick, stated that the company is also appealing the CMA’s decision. The company emphasizes that the acquisition benefits competition. Additionally, Kotick warned that upholding the CMA’s decision would hinder investment, job creation, and competition in the UK gaming industry.

What Implications Does This Have For The Metaverse?

The CMA’s decision to block the acquisition raises questions about its impact on the Metaverse. The gaming industry and the Metaverse share a significant overlap in talent and resources. Acquiring Activision Blizzard would provide Microsoft with comprehensive resources to create excellent immersive experiences.

The acquisition reflects Microsoft’s significant investment in developing safe, inclusive, and accessible gaming platforms. This is primarily via community-building, high-quality content, and cloud opportunities.

Microsoft Gaming CEO, Phil Spencer, stated that the acquisition enables the company to create a future where gamers can play their favourite games virtually anywhere. In addition, Bobby Kotick emphasized that the acquisition guarantees continued success in a highly competitive market.
