UK invest £100 million for expert taskforce

The Prime Minister and the Technology Secretary of the U.K have announced plans to invest £100 million in the Artificial intelligence foundation model to strengthen the country’s abilities in cutting-edge technology.

AI foundation models like Google Bard and ChatGPT have been trained on several data sets to carry out a wide range of activities and intricate abilities across different domains.

The UK government is also investing £900m in a new ‘exascale’ supercomputer to aid the growth of artificial intelligence. The AI task force which was modelled after the success of the Covid-19 vaccines task force is aimed at developing reliable and safe use of AI and also making sure that the UK can compete globally in the world of AI.

UK Government Introduces AI Taskforce

The UK Government inaugurated the AI task force during the Integrated Review Refresh in March and will unite industry experts and the government. They would submit their reports to the prime minister and the Technology secretary. The UK expects that this initiative will develop the capability and potential of AI that would improve areas such as education and healthcare.

“Harnessing the potential of AI provides enormous opportunities to grow our economy, create better-paid jobs, and build a better future through advances in healthcare and security.”

UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak on AI

This initiative has come after predictions have shown that AI will add billions of pounds to UK’s GDP and also raise the world GDP by 7 percent in 10 years. This has made its adoption an opportunity to develop the UK’s economy. The AI task force will help to fulfill the prime minister’s plans of growing the country’s economy and also improving the general welfare of people. An example is in the area of healthcare; AI has massive potential to increase drug discovery, and development and also speed up diagnosis.

AI systems and the public

The government stressed that the task force will work towards helping businesses and gaining public confidence in AI systems. In addition, the task force will work with the sector to develop the dependability and safety of the AI foundation models at a scientific and commercial rate.

The public service will also be part of the revolutionary impact of AI. The first experiments focusing on public services will launch in six months. The task force will aim at opportunities that would make the UK a global leader in AI systems and also a global benchmark for AI reliability and safety. The Prime Minister added that the investment in emerging technologies through the AI task force will be integral in shaping “a more innovative UK economy.” Also, the UK government recently announced plans to regulate AI via new policies on “responsible use.”
