Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space and Technology Commission, in partnership with the International Telecommunications Union, recently held an online event to discuss the potential of metaverse technologies in smart cities.

The conversation centered around how these technologies can improve the standard of living for people, promote education, create job opportunities, increase civic participation, and strengthen global alliances.

The Global Science, Technology and Innovation Forum

The discussion occurred during the two-day online Global Science, Technology and Innovation Forum which commenced on Thursday.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council organized the forum. The platform enhances empirical science-oriented policymaking for developing transformations to achieve sustainable development goals. These goals are the blueprint to create a good and sustainable future for everyone.

Ambassador Abdulaziz Wasil, the permanent representative of Saudi Arabia to the UN opened the discussion with the goals of the Saudi Arabia 2030 vision and its adoption of emerging technologies, especially the metaverse technology. He mentioned events that have been hosted by the Kingdom were focused on the adoption of these technologies especially in smart cities.

He mentioned that the Kingdom is working together with the ITU to solidify the standards and visions for the use of metaverse technologies to promote the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The director of the international negotiation department at the CST, Moaz Bin Sulaiman Al-Rumaih, emphasized the progress made by the Kingdom in smart cities and digital transformation. He mentioned the achievements of the Kingdom in the telecommunications industry. The partnership between the CST and several international organizations has made the Kingdom a benchmark for digital transformation both locally and internationally.
