In a remarkable innovation, Bigscreen’s first foray into hardware is set to launch Bigscreen Beyond, the world’s smallest Virtual Reality (VR) headset. The ultra-lightweight headset weighs 127 grams and is under 1 inch. Bigscreen Beyond weighs six times less than its competitor’s offerings while boasting several other specifications.
Bigscreen Beyond has the following features:
- PC tethering for comprehensive gaming experiences
- Ultra-high-resolution organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays
- 5120 x 2560 resolution
- 28 pixels per degree (PPD)
- Up to 90 hertz refresh rates
- Pancake optic lenses
- Bespoke face guards and shapes for buyers
Bigscreen offers a unique, immersive experience for its users. Since 2014, their cutting-edge VR platform has enabled streaming movies with friends and colleagues across PCs. It also operates on platforms like Meta Quest 2 and Pro, Windows Mixed Reality (MR) head-mounted displays, and SteamVR headsets such as the HTC VIVE and the Valve Index.
Big Beyond Technical Features
For every Bigscreen Beyond pre-order, customers will get an app invitation to 3D scan their faces with iPhone XR or newer versions of the Apple mobile phone. The cutting-edge 3D mesh building technology uses TrueDepth sensors to map the users’ faces with extraordinary accuracy.
The app has computer vision tools capable of measuring interpupillary distance (IPD) and facial contours in five minutes. After gathering measurements, the Bigscreen develops the custom face cushion and front interface to match the user’s unique features. This may take from weeks to months, depending on the demand.
“As passionate VR enthusiasts, we built the VR headset we wanted for ourselves. Today’s leading VR headsets have doubled in weight compared to headsets from 2016. We built Beyond because we felt VR was too heavy, bulky, and uncomfortable.”
Darshan Shankar, Bigscreen Founder and Chief Executive
Customers who receive their custom headsets can enjoy complete clarity and comfort with their devices. This results in significant benefits such as zero light leakage, perfect IPD alignment, and even weight distribution. The cushions can also be hand washed to keep the headset clean. There is also provision for magnetically-connected prescription lenses to accommodate the headset’s optics.
Bigscreen Beyond provides a warm headset-wearing experience with its soft head straps and audio speakers. It also has ergonomically designed audio straps outfitted with on-ear headphones.
Bigscreen Beyond integrates SteamVR
Bigscreen Beyond also fully equipped with built-in SteamVR tracking for body positioning and spatial orientation. Using a SteamVR v1.0 or v.2.0 base station, it also offers full six degrees of flight (6DoF) body tracking. This also integrates the SteamVR game streaming platform, where gamers can choose from a vast catalogue of hit titles. Users must first download the Steam client and SteamVR apps for Windows PCs. Gamers can complement the full-body tracking wearables with HTC VIVE and Valve Index controllers.
When will Bigscreen Beyond be available?
Bigscreen Beyond will be released in Q3 of 2023. Interested buyers can pre-order for $999 and get a full refund whenever needed before the device ships. The device is available in North American markets such as the United States and Canada and in European markets such as Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and others. Bigscreen Beyond will also be available to buyers in Australia, New Zealand, and Australia as the company plans to expand next year.
