Spotify is introducing a new ” DJ ” feature exclusively for its UK and Ireland premium customers. Designed to enhance music discovery, this feature employs artificial intelligence to curate music and provide English commentary. Using the AI DJ is reminiscent of listening to a radio DJ, offering a similar experience.
Initially launched in February for premium subscribers in the US and Canada, this feature utilizes OpenAI’s technology and is currently in the beta stage, which means there may be some minor issues.
Post Launch Observations
Following the feature’s release, Spotify observed that most DJ users were from the Gen Z and millennial demographic, comprising 87% of the user base. Moreover, individuals using the AI DJ daily spend around 25% of their listening time with the feature.
Spotify claims that Xavier “X” Jernigan, the organization’s director of cultural collaborations, inspired the DJ feature’s voice. For example, when users access the feature, they might hear updates about Arlo Parks and her upcoming album, “My Soft Machine,” set to release by the end of the month. In the future, Spotify envisions leveraging this feature as a potential revenue stream by promoting new releases on its platform.
AI DJ Features
The company disclosed that combining its Sonantic acquisition in 2022 and OpenAI technology powers the AI DJ. The AI DJ feature in Spotify functions by automatically playing tracks for users. They also have the option to tap on the AI DJ button to change moods or genres. As with most AI-assisted technologies, this feature learns more about user preferences and choices as they continue to listen.
The AI DJ features is accessible on iOS and Android platforms. Users can find it in the Music Feed section of the app by simply tapping on the DJ card.
