Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has announced it will add a new product group focusing on generative AI. Generative AI is a revolutionary new machine learning (ML) technique that allows computers to produce texts and create images and other media that closely mimic human output.
The move is coming as startups, and tech corporations compete to implement cutting-edge ML capabilities and AI models in their products and services. Zuckerberg stated in a Facebook post that several units across Meta will be involved in the new AI endeavor. Mr. Zuckerberg also noted that the current Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, would oversee the new group. He further explained that the team would create innovative and “expressive tools” that Meta’s products would use.
Zuckerberg explained that its new AI endeavor could involve introducing the technology to the experiences of Whatsapp, Messenger, and Instagram users.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO
“We’re exploring experiences with text (like chat in WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (like creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with video and multi-modal experiences,”
The tech giant Chief is acutely aware of the potential for AI within Meta but cautions that much development is ahead before it can explore its full impact. With an eye on ‘futuristic experiences,’ Zuckerberg insists there remains a lot of work to get the company closer to realizing these ambitions.
Meta’s recent innovative technology journey
Although Meta is not a new kid in the block in the innovative tech space, its Reality Labs business- which creates an umbrella section for Meta’s AR, VR, and mixed-reality endeavors- has struggled badly recently. However, Mr. Zuckerberg reiterated the company’s commitment to its long-term metaverse goals after its underwhelming Q4 performance.
AI has become a rapidly heating field in the tech space since the emergence of Open AI’s ChatGPT. On Monday, Snap announced it would introduce a ChatGPT bot into Snapchat. Microsoft recently integrated large language models by Open AI into its browser- Microsoft Bing. Google is also making progress with its AI-driven bot named Bard.
