The US Senate issues a bill to create AI task force

The United States Senate has submitted a bill proposing the creation of a task force to investigate the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems on privacy, civil liberties, and due process. The increasing popularity of AI platforms like ChatGPT has brought attention to the need for regulation worldwide.

In the US, national security experts have expressed concerns about foreign antagonists using AI, while teachers have reported cases of cheating in exams and projects. The task force, which includes cabinet members and privacy and civil liberties officers from various agencies, will assess the regulatory control of AI and provide recommendations for improvement.

Michael Bennet, a Democrat Senator from Colorado has highlighted the lack of understanding surrounding these issues. Many expect the administration will need to be spontaneous and iterative in fighting against AI due to its unfamiliarity.

“There’s going to be a lot of improvisation and iterative approaches to try to wrestle with this because AI is so new to everyone in the government.”

The bill stipulates that the task force will consist of Administrators from the Office of Management and Budget, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Additionally, the task force will work for 18 months and provide the Senate with a final report before closing upon completing its mission.

AI and regulations

The increasing interest and adoption of AI has highlighted the need for regulations to ensure its responsible and ethical use. For instance, the United Kingdom recently took a step forward by consolidating its task force and announcing plans to invest £100 million towards AI regulation.

This significant investment demonstrates a global commitment to ensuring that the public develops and uses AI responsibly and ethically. In addition, the regulations will aim to protect the public from potential harm caused by AI and ensure that the technology is used for the greater good of society.
